On this day, three years ago, the Mount Saint Mary College community was sent an email detailing the school's temporary closure due to the Coronavirus. What students initially thought would be a lengthened spring break turned into much more, as the pandemic uprooted many lives, including those of Mount Saint Mary College families.
The classes of 2020 and 2023, along with those in between, suffered greatly. The class of 2020 never got their senior year of college, and the class of 2023 never got a "normal" year after their freshman year was cut short. There was never a return to "normal" after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fear of another shutdown lingered in students' minds.
Recently, students received an email announcing that the college will no longer require the Covid-19 vaccine for incoming and current students, with the exception of specific programs such as nursing. While this policy can change at any moment, it's just another reminder that we are moving in the right direction.
Whether you are in your last semester or still have a while to go, it's essential to make the most of your time now. Don't take the opportunities available to you for granted, and don't forget the lessons that this pandemic has taught us.
Remember what we all lost, but also remember what we have gained. We have gained a new perspective, a deeper appreciation for the things that matter most, and a greater understanding of our strength and resilience.
So as we move forward into an uncertain future, let us hold on to these lessons and let them guide us toward a brighter future.
