Ask Mike: “How can I establish a routine for myself despite having all of this freedom in college?”

Having a good routine might be one of the most important aspects of a successful college career.

The freedom young adults gain when entering college is one that can easily be taken advantage of. Establishing a good routine can be difficult, but assessing your schedule and responsibilities at the beginning of the semester will not only find you success in classes but the ability to maintain your freedom as well.

I think one of the easiest ways to establish a routine is to build a calendar for yourself. Starting with your classes, you can then begin to add other responsibilities you may have, such as a club or a weekly dinner with friends.

Once you’ve sorted out your priorities you can start to create sections for whatever it is you chose to do with your free time. Take into consideration the day after, especially if your free time is filled with some time out on the town.

Morning and nighttime routines are important to implement, as starting and ending the day right will ensure the inbetween will go just as well.

The important thing about having a good routine, regardless of the freedom, is definitely providing structure for yourself. If I’ve learned anything over the course of my time in college, it's that structure is essential to success.

If you struggle to maintain the balance between freedom and routine, luckily there are offices to help students with that. The office of student success is a great place to see friendly faces that will be there to help you and gain some of that structure. Or even to help you get started with putting together your routine.

Being able to acknowledge that you're struggling with this freedom is huge, and going to the office of student success is a great way to get yourself back on track.
