Is Justin Fields a Realistic Option for the Giants?

The Giants certainly have the assets to acquire Justin Fields; but would it be the best move?

This will likely be a popular option for Giants fans. If the Chicago Bears decide to select a quarterback with the first overall pick and trade Fields, it will likely take a package centered around a second-round pick to get a deal done for him. The Giants acquired an additional second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Leonard Williams at the trade deadline this past season. The Seahawks trade allows the Giants to send the Bears a second-round pick for Fields while still being able to make a selection in the second round.

There are a few issues, however. Since Fields will be entering his fourth season in the NFL, the Giants would have to pick up his fully guaranteed fifth-year option; meaning Fields will be rostered for two-years minimum. According to Courtney Cronin of ESPN, Fields' fifth-year option for the 2025 season would cost $23.3 million.

If the Giants acquired Fields, they would need to extend him within the next two years. If Fields plays exceptionally well, it would be a no-brainer. However, that outcome is unlikely due to Fields still being a raw player, having to learn a brand-new offensive system and adjust to a new group of weapons.

There will likely be competition to land Fields as well, making it no guarantee that the Giants will acquire him even if that’s the direction they want to go.

Due to these factors, a Fields trade is a bit unlikely unless the Giants believe head coach Brian Daboll and his offensive staff can mold Fields into a superstar quarterback.
